Beirut – The play “Beirut” is a very dark production set in the 21st century ruins of a major city where those with HIV are held in part of the city fenced off by barbed wire. The hand-drawn text image of “Beirut” was adapted from a dry-transfer typeface created by Chartpak. The contemporary font Eurostile was used to convey the fact this is a modern love story. Honored with a Bronze Summit Creative Award, this logo is featured in The New Big Book of Logos and New Logo World (Japan).

The Dream State

The Dream State – For this theatrical production identity, I began by playing with the placement of words – and then toyed with the positioning of the moon and star elements I immediately wanted to add. Once all items were in place, I selected CircusDog, from fonthead.com, as the perfect type solution. The design won an American Graphic Design Award, and appears in the books “The Big Book of Logos 4,” “Logos from North to South America” (Spain) and “100’s Visual Logos and Letterheads.”

C.A.T.

C.A.T. – I had one of those “aha” moments when this rough concept came together. With the acronym C.A.T., I wanted to create a graphic image that would clearly identify the organization without the need to spell out the name in all uses. The design won a Silver Award in the Summit Creative Awards. It is also in the book “Killed Ideas, Vol. 1″ and will be in the volume “Designing for the Greater Good.”

Emerge

Emerge – The Emerge logo makes use of the typeface Allise from fonthead.com and incorporates the traditional symbolism of dragonfly imagery. The input of a psychic and use of runes within the design were part of the design process. The logo appears in “The Big Book of Logos 5.” It also won an American Corporate Identity 23 award.

PavelComm

PavelComm – I was looking for a well-balanced and unique uppercase “P” letterform to initiate the identity for the communications company PavelComm. I immediately thought of Palatino with its graceful, yet professional, uppercase “P.” However, I didn’t necessary like the Palatino treatment of the italic letters used to make up the name. Still, italics were desired to show some movement in the PavelComm corporate identity. I made use of the regular Palatino letterforms I liked so much and then digitally skewed them to give the appearance of the type being italic. In the process a unique identity was created for the company.

The Sentinel

The Sentinel – A logo redesign for a monthly North Portland neighborhood newspaper involved combining letterforms from two typefaces, Boca Raton and Rockwell, to create a unique type treatment of the word “Sentinel.” A third typeface, Helvetica Neue, was introduced for the line of location text.

Stumptown Clowns

Stumptown Clowns – This spring I went to clown school and was a member of the Portland Rose Festival/Amtrak Cascades Character Clown Corps. Following the festival a few clowns decided to strike out on our own as the Stumptown Clowns and I created this identity for our parade signage.
